Before the show
You can register your pet for the exhibition in the kennel club or via the Internet. This must be done in advance – the record opens 6 months before the start of the event. For regional and all-Russian exhibitions recording ends 1-2 weeks before the start, for international – a month before the start. Depending on the class of the dog, you need to provide certain data. For baby, puppy, and Junior classes, you will need a pet metric. For more adult classes pedigree is required. If your four-legged friend has not mastered sufficient skills, but is already able to move in the slip lead, you can apply his candidature for participation in the exhibition.
Please note that the pet will need a certificate from the state veterinary clinic. It can be of two types: form №4 for Moscow and form №1 for participants from other cities. The certificate is valid for 5 days.
Come to the exhibition in advance, because there are several procedures ahead: veterinary control, registration, obtaining a participant number. Next, find your ring and prepare for the exit. Find and take a comfortable position from which everything will be clearly visible and audible. Remember that the ring for a dog is a new territory, so the pet needs time to get used to it.
Pay attention to your appearance: you will have to move a lot in the ring, sit down and bend, so it’s important to choose the right shoes and clothes in which you will feel comfortable. It’s desirable that it had pockets in which you can put a toy and treats for the dog. Everything else leave behind the ring: top and long-sleeved clothes, mobile phones, bags. Your appearance should be aimed at showing the dog and be combined with its appearance.
You can also take a small waist bag for treats and toys. It’s better if it is on the zipper, but not on the carbine – while moving in the ring, they are loose, and food may fall out. So don’t fill your bag to the limit.
What do you need for the exhibition:
- metric or pedigree (copy);
- veterinary certificate and passport;
- receipt of payment of participation;
- the slip-lead;

At exhibitions, the evaluation algorithm for all classes looks about the same.

Comparison on “the Best”
At the first stage, the judges evaluate the best dogs among males and females. Then the best one is selected from the picked representatives. For example, first choose the best baby male, then the best baby female. Next, they choose the “Best baby”. And this way is applied for each class – babies, puppies, juniors, all adult classes.
The “best representative“ of the breed is chosen among the winners in the “Best Junior”, “Best male” and “Best female” classes.
Before the beginning of the examination, the ring worker invites all participants of the same class to enter the ring. He announces the class and numbers of the contestants. Watch and listen carefully, as the noise of the hall will distract you.
It’s forbidden to enter the ring without permission. This can only be done during a break in the ring. When you have the opportunity, take the dog and walk with it – so the pet will understand what is required of him.
At the beginning of the exhibition, an expert examines the dog’s teeth. If the animal shows aggression, it can be removed from the ring. Next, the pet is put in a stand, a general description is being made. In this case, the expert can carry out a manual examination. However, to put the final score, It’s important not only appearance. Your four-legged friend should behave confidently and calmly, as well as show the temperament and character typical of the Siberian husky.
While waiting in line for examination, the dog should be laid down or put down. This is important, because if the expert looks in your direction, the animal should look in a favorable position. At the same time, if there are many competitors in the class, there is no need to keep the dog in the entire ring in the stand. She will get tired very quickly this way and lose interest in the dog show. Remember – you need to stand in several cases: at the beginning, when the expert examines all the participants, as well as during the selection and placement.
When your turn is approaching, and the dog in front of you is about to receive an assessment, having already passed more than half of the judging, in this case, put a four-legged friend in the stand. In this case, the expert at the beginning of the examination will see your dog immediately in the stand, and not in a relaxed state.
What is important to pay attention to when setting the husky in the stand:
- The head should be raised;
- The placement of the forelimbs is on the width of the chest, parallel to each other, perpendicular to the ground;
- Elbows pressed to the body;
- Pasterns, not sloping, not straight, no mark up;
- Hind limbs are parallel, shoulder width apart, pastern is at an angle of 90 degrees to the ground;
Straight back.
The duration of the stand is at least 2-3 minutes. At this time, the husky should freeze and not react when you move near it.
When the dog has a good constitution, but it’s temperamental, doesn’t stand still and reacts badly to your commands, then learn to put the animal in a free stand. This means that you do not correct the pet’s paws with your hands, but use a slip lead which helps you to move the dog. In this case, she becomes in the correct position herself.
Another important point is your behavior and interaction with the expert. Listen to him carefully, follow his requests, answer only when you are asked. Watch all the gestures. Never argue with the expert, as for this you can be removed from the ring.
Your Siberian husky should appear at its best: calm and confident pet. Movement-free, easy trot. The dog does not stray at a gallop and gets the proper stand at the right moment. This is how the expert should see your four-legged friend.
Going into the ring with your dog, remember the right attitude: put out of your head uncertainty and doubt. When you are calm, this state will be transmitted to your pet. And this will help him perform much better. Smile and keep positive to make a good impression. Don’t worry if you suddenly do something wrong – the expert will tell you and orientate you in the next steps.
The husky must move at a moderately fast trot, show a good release of the front limbs and push the rear in the exhibition ring. The upper line of the dog during the movement should be smooth and motionless.
Preparation for a foreign exhibition
If you have visited many dog shows inside your country and want to show your pet to the world, then visit the international dog show. Remember that foreign exhibitions mean the highest level training, as well as serious financial investments. At the same time, you will get an invaluable experience, a lot of new impressions and useful acquaintances. It’s also a great chance to look at the country from a different angle, to communicate with different people, to get useful knowledge.
You can prepare for the trip yourself, or entrust it to special travel companies that organize trips to dog shows. Specialists will help you to apply for a dog, book a place in a hotel, get a visa. If necessary, travel agencies will provide specially equipped transport for your pet.
If suddenly you cannot go with your four-legged friend at the exhibition, you can use the services of a handler. However, it’s important that this is a person which the dog knows well and you personally trust.
And the main thing is that exhibitions are just a game, remember this. You didn’t win? It’s okay, so you get it next time. Maybe it wasn’t your day, or you didn’t finish something. Don’t blame or scold the dog. After all, participation in the exhibition for husky is always a holiday!
